Last night in Philly, I was feeling the urge to be a torch singer, so I skipped my usual black-jeans-and-hot-pink-lipstick outfit and instead went for the fitted black retro-ish dress with red roses and black patent leather pumps. I also swapped my beloved hot pink lipstick for red. I told Reed that since I felt like being a torch singer, maybe we should play Entropy which is a slower, moodier song. We have discovered that we prefer the general admission (non-seated) venues, because at those venues people come a lot earlier to secure a good spot up front. That means we have a large captive (and sometimes drunk) audience standing right in front of us when we play. But at the venues with reserved seating, the seats in the theater are sometimes half empty when we start, and the people who are there are more reserved. It makes it much harder to sense how we are being received. Well The Merriam Theater last night in Philly was reserved seating. That fact, coupled with the fact that my heels were slightly too high and I felt self-conscious in my clothing choices, made me not so confident on stage. I managed to gain my confidence back during the middle of the set, however the moral of the story is: always stick to hot pink lipstick and black jeans whenever possible. Ok- I guess it’s a moral that just applies to me. We stayed for Erasure’s set and then hung out with Vince and another Very Records recording artist named Alka afterwards. Vince made toast in his dressing room, which is how we discovered that one can ask for a toaster in one’s rider. Good to know. Predictably, there was a lot of talk about synthesizers, but also about how hard it is to find a good contractor to fix a leaky roof. Alka explained a new sub-genre to the middle aged people (me, Reed and Vince) in the room: “Dark Wave.” It just refers to New Wave music that is darker than other New Wave music. Good to know in case I ever go to a party of synthesizer-playing Millennials (I won’t). Today we drove from Philly to DC. We stayed in an AirBnb in Philly and are staying at one in DC. It’s been interesting to discover these little neighborhoods we wouldn’t have known about otherwise. This neighborhood in DC is called Shaw. Lots of really cool old buildings/houses. Tomorrow morning we’re going to hit the Museum of African American History, which should be interesting. And if we happen to wander past a Sephora located .2 miles from it, then I guess it’s gods plan for me to wander in.
